Grenada

Capital - St George's

In many ways Grenada seems to have everything; beautiful soft sand beaches, a mountainous and lush rainforest interior, St George’s, it’s picture perfect capital, and some of the friendliest people in the Caribbean. It’s far less developed than some of the other larger islands, with quiet and uncrowded beaches. Grand Anse Beach, Grenada’s largest, is two-miles long, and is a stunning sweep of white sand lapped by turquoise clear water and backed by green hills, considered by many to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean.

Also known as the Spice Island, Grenada grows more spices per square mile than anywhere else in the world – you can actually smell the nutmeg in the air! It is a three island state made up of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique, all connected via ferry.

It is one of the most beautiful and picturesque Caribbean islands, retaining much of its Colonial past and offering traditional West Indian charm and hospitality. Visitors are guaranteed a warm welcome!

Flight time to Grenada is around 9 hours and British Airways fly twice weekly from London Gatwick on a Wednesday and Saturday (via St Lucia), whilst Virgin also fly from London Gatwick (via St Lucia) on a Monday and Thursday in Winter, and Monday and Friday in Summer.

With average temperatures between 24 and 30 degrees and a cooling breeze, Grenada is the ideal year round destination – and it’s also south of the main hurricane belt!

Why Grenada?
“Grenada has everything you could wish for in a Caribbean holiday. It’s not just about the beaches, beautiful though they are, there is so much more to see and do, not to mention some of the friendliest people you could hope to meet” – Karen Williams, Co-founder of The Caribbeanist.

The Caribbeanist’s Grenada Top 5

1. Exploring St George’s, Grenada’s vividly colourful harbour capital is a must. Highlights are the market, to stock up on spices to take home with you, and wandering along the pretty, inner harbour called the Carenage, where you’ll find plenty of restaurants serving local cuisine.

2. Visit Grand Etang National Park where you’ll encounter exotic wildlife, including armadillos, monkeys and tropical mocking birds, and see Grand Etang Crater Lake, an extinct submarine volcano.

3. More than 30 dive sites can be found off the coasts of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique, including, shipwrecks, coral reefs and the world’s first Underwater Sculpture Park.

4. A trip to Carriacou and Petite Martinique is highly recommended. Located to the north of Grenada these two small islands exude an even less touristy atmosphere than Grenada. The snorkelling off Sandy Island, Carriacou, is some of the best we’ve ever experienced.

5. Visit the River Antoine Rum Distillery which claims to be the oldest continuously operated rum factory in the Caribbean. A thirty minute guided tour lets you observe the whole of the fascinating traditional rum making process (with some obligatory tasting at the conclusion of course!).
